As you probably know by now, this upcoming week is the 2013 Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration. We invite you to “Let Justice Lead and Freedom Roar”” during this upcoming week by attending the events that we have planned:
On Monday, January 21, 2013, we ask you to take a DAY ON instead of a day off by participating in our annual Day of Service in Heritage Hall. You can sign up at volunteer.psu.edu! Also, take this opportunity to save up to 3 lives when you give blood at the MLK Blood Drive in Alumni Hall. This is also a THON Blood Drive: donate and the Student Red Cross Club will donate $4 to the organization of your choice! For appointments sign up at http://www.psuredcross.org/
On Tuesday, January 22, 2013, we invite you to listen to enticing speeches revolved around our theme, “Let Justice Lead and Freedom Roar” and the ideals of MLK by attending Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Oratorical Contest. This contest will be taking place in 100 Life Sciences at 6:30pm.
On Wednesday, January 23, 2013, join us in an evening of celebration with keynote speaker, Ruby Bridges. At the age of 6 in 1960, Bridges became the first black student to attend William Frantz Public School in New Orleans, LA. We will also be having performances by Ambitions Dance Organization and School of Music students, Kiena Williams and Donte Ford. Tickets are required but free and can be picked up at Eisenhower Auditorium, Bryce Jordan Center Ticket Office, the HUB-Robeson Center Info Desk or Penn State Downtown Theatre Center. Business Casual attire is preferred, but not required.
On Thursday, January 24, 2013, we invite you to come to our Community Showcase, walk with us in our Peace March, and engage in powerful discussions at our Social Justice Forum.
– The Community Showcase is a display of the written and artistic talent of students in the K-12 grade schools in the State College area.
This showcase will feature winning essays of an essay contest about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in relation to this year’s commemoration theme: Let Justice Lead & Freedom Roar. Winners will be presented with a certificate and the pieces will be on display for those who attend. This event will be held at 5:30pm in the Memorial Lounge of the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center.
– In our Peace March, we ask that you walk with us as we walk in memory of the marches that were held by leaders during the Civil Rights Movement for peace and justice for all. Along the way, enjoy student performances in honor of the late Dr. King. We will be meeting outside of the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center at 6:30pm.
– The Social Justice Forum will engage in students in an open forum on several cases questioning social justice. Come share your ideas on what social justice truly is. This event will be held at 7:30pmin the Memorial Lounge of the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center.
We hope to see you at our events and feel free to invite your friends!
